Visits from the Press!

Denis from The Bangkok Recorder came for the full beginners course a couple of weeks ago. What a nice guy! And a good student too – he picked it up very quickly. I’m hoping he’ll be back again soon so we can get him up and jumping high too!

So he wrote a small report on his time with us -

Thanks Denis!!

The wind’s changing!

November, December and half of January are not normal Thailand - regular 18-20kt days and big seas.

but around mid january the North Easterly monsoon winds stop and the South Easterly thermal winds pick up. Back to normal Thailand! a nice comfortable 13/14kts in the morning building up to 16/17 late afternoon. Flat water, warm seas, and late wake-ups. This is the Thailand I know!!!

The ups and downs…

riding 11am-4pm 14-22kts

wind is never steady. if the forecast says 14kts average it will be 12kts about 50% of the time and 17kts about 50% of the time. on an average day there are 20-30 seconds between the changes, but then slight flickers around every 7 seconds.

what does that mean for kitesurfing? hold your wind meter up for more than 2 seconds!! and better still - look at other people on the water - and use your eyes.

today was on the wrong side of gusty - up to 22 and down to 14. that makes it hard to choose a kite size!! variations of ‘damm where’s the wind’ to ‘holy s$%#!!!!!!’

i think the wind’s about to change…

No wind in Thailand. Yeah right!! 25+kts today…

riding 10am-9pm 25kts morning dropping to 14 at 9pm

what a day! Are we still in thailand? 22+kts and big seas this morning. Gusts too strong for my 7m. I think we’ve shifted to vietnam…

craig and cerie had a little night kite this evening – flat water and full moon. They’re still in awe…

He’s no beginner!!

riding 10am-5pm 16kts average gusts 19

marco hit the water today. He told me he was just a beginner so I went through the basics very slowly. Then I gave him the board and – wow!!! he’s no beginner! Off he shot at a million miles an hour – left, right, downwind.

We’ll be working on going upwind tomorrow to save him the long ‘walk of shame’ back up the beach…

great conditions for learning!

riding 10.30am-2pm 13-16kts
Ashley got to grips with the kite in an instant and found that whilst bodydragging he could launch himself almost totally out of the water by pulling in hard on the bar. the first couple of times i thought ‘oh my god!!’ but when i realised it was intentional i just laughed with him. he was a happy camper today!!

the new year is off to a good start!

riding 10am-6pm 16-21kts
no brushing the ice off ropes here - no wrapping up in drysuit/gloves/boots - oh happy memories of home! (not)
but the same wind and the same cobwebs to blow out ot the system after a big night. we were a little down in numbers today - half of the crew decided to stay in bed…
